William H. Heaton

William H. (“Will”) Heaton joined with James A. Fontano to form Heaton Fontano, Ltd. in January, 2017, after working at Nitz, Walton & Heaton Ltd., in Las Vegas, Nevada for 34 years.  Will was pleased to welcome his son, Jonathan (Jon) Heaton to the Heaton Fontano firm a few months after its formation.

Following his graduation from law school, Will moved to Las Vegas in 1982 and accepted employment with Nitz, Schofield & Walton (later Nitz, Walton & Heaton, Ltd.), a firm that served a variety of business clients – large and small.  The growth that has occurred in in the Las Vegas Valley since the early 1980’s gave Will the opportunity to develop significant experience and skill in assisting with a wide variety of business transactions and litigation claims, including the formation, maintenance and licensing of business entities; preparation and implementation of contracts, promissory notes, security instruments and other documents pertaining to the purchase and sale of businesses, business assets and business interests; the development, lease and sale of real property and real property interests, and creation of documentation necessary to memorialize those types of transactions; initiating, perfecting and resolving mechanic’s lien claims, and handling other construction related disputes; assisting with the prevention and resolution of claims and litigation emanating from employer/employee relationships; and formation and administration of trusts and other estate and succession plans.  Will continues to find helping business owners plan, meet business and legal challenges, and achieve success to be some of the most personally rewarding aspects of the practice of law.

A consistent volunteer in church and community affairs, Will finds those activities to be personally rewarding.  He enjoys spending leisure time with family and friends.

Education and Other Experience

Will graduated in 1979 from Southern Utah State College (now Southern Utah University) in Cedar City, Utah with a BS Degree in Accounting, and in 1982 received his law degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School in Provo, Utah; but, attributes much of his commonsense business approach to the practice of law to his early upbringing on a family owned cattle ranch in a rural Kane County, Utah.   Will served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from October 1974 to October 1976 in and around Tokyo, Japan, and has a continuing keen interest in people and cultures from other parts of the world.

Bar Admissions and Licenses

Will is licensed to practice law in Nevada, Utah and Arizona.

James A. Fontano

James A. Fontano is a founding member of Heaton Fontano, Ltd. In a world where increasing specialization removes the personal connection from the attorney-client relationship, Jim is an old-school attorney that is concerned for his clients’ personal and professional needs. Equally comfortable in the courtroom and the boardroom, he can try a case to its final verdict or direct a commercial transaction through final signature.

After graduating from law school in 2002, Jim spent eighteen months serving as a law clerk for Judge Valerie Adair at the Eighth Judicial District Court in Las Vegas. Before joining forces with Will Heaton to form Heaton Fontano, he worked in a boutique business-law firm focused on helping small to mid-size businesses in all areas of running a business. Since starting Heaton Fontano in 2017, Jim has focused on providing personal and professional legal services to a diverse clientele, including restaurants, commercial real estate, personal service, tech, entertainment, retail, hospitality, medical, and varied other businesses. Jim’s clients appreciate his honesty and his determination to get to the bottom line.

Jim is not just a lawyer to his clients—he is their general counsel and strategic advisor, as well. They rely on him for the kind of unfiltered advice they might not otherwise get, even from their own management.

Education

Jim is a graduate of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, where he served as an editor of the law review and a member of the trial advocacy team. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 2000.

Bar Admissions

Jim is admitted to practice law in all Nevada State courts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada, and the United States Supreme Court.

Jonathan W. Heaton

Jonathan W. Heaton joined Heaton Fontano in April 2017 and started the firm’s Salt Lake City office.  Having grown up in Las Vegas and attended school in Provo, Jon has spent most of his life between Nevada and Utah and enjoys many friendships and associations in both states.

After graduating from school in 2011 with a joint law degree and masters degree in accounting, Jon spent the following year serving as a law clerk for Judge Valerie Adair of the Eighth Judicial District Court in Las Vegas.  He later accepted a position with Goldman Sachs in Salt Lake City where he worked for nearly four years as a Vice President of Global Compliance overseeing and advising on various financial industry regulatory compliance matters with firm-wide reach and impact.   Along the way, Jon has started and been involved in several side entrepreneurial ventures, which have added depth and “real-life” practical business experience to his legal and financial expertise.

Jon’s education and experiences both prior to and since joining Heaton Fontano have equipped him with invaluable insights and skills that he now uses to represent and advise clients in a variety of business and personal financial settings.  Among other things, his current practice encompasses business formations, corporate governance, contracts and transactions, employment issues, strategic business planning, regulatory compliance and risk management, commercial litigation and dispute resolution, and estates and trusts.

Outside of the office, Jon is actively involved in volunteering in his church and community, enjoys exploring the outdoors areas around the Salt Lake valley, plays the violin and piano, and travels internationally as often as he can find the time.

Education

Jon is a graduate of the J. Reuben Clark Law School and the Marriott School of Business at Brigham Young University.  While in school, he served as Managing Editor of Administration for the BYU Law Review, was a member of the Moot Court Team’s governing Board of Advocates, and played in BYU’s Symphony Orchestra for several years.  Jon spent two years living in Thailand (which he considers an important, if informal, part of his education), and is fluent in the Thai language.  His bachelor’s degree is in accountancy.

Bar Admissions and Licenses

Jon is admitted to practice law in Utah, Nevada, and New York.  He is also licensed as a CPA in Colorado.

“William Heaton has been my personal and business attorney for many years. He is an extremely knowledgeable attorney that has always provided me with excellent service and sound advice.  I’m happy to say that as my attorney, he looks out for my best interest.  I’m grateful to have him as my attorney and proud to call him my friend.”

~ Demita Smith, Owner and Administrator

Prestige Electric

“I have known Will Heaton as a close friend and my attorney for many years and he has stayed my close friend and attorney for many years.  In today’s business and legal environment, that is a testament of Will’s character and ability.  Will has always kept a level head and let reason and good judgement lead his recommendations.  Too many lawyers are happy to spend your dollars on the wrong path.  Will has always kept my best interests and wellbeing as the primary focus of his work.  If society had more attorneys like Will Heaton, we would need less Attorneys!!”

~ Larry K. Long, CEO

Holman Security Corporation

“William Heaton has represented us and our business for more than 30 years.  He is professional, thorough and always responsive when we need him.  We wholeheartedly recommend him and James Fontano.”
